Important Kerala Travel Information

We have put together a bunch of travel tips if you are indulging in Kerala travel. These travel tips are not the final word but they get you by just in case. Some of them are standard travel tips that hold good for any country. But most of them are Kerala-centric.

What to pack

Kerala is a warm region and during the monsoons it rains once in a while. Hence it gets humid. When you are planning your holiday in Kerala, an important tip is to carry lots of light and thin cotton clothing. Carry sunglasses and umbrellas. Also carry at least two sets of swimsuits (That way you always have one dry set to wear). All resorts in Kerala have beautiful swimming pools. The beaches of Kerala are fantastic. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Carry one or two nice evening dresses for dinner at a good restaurant.

Languages in Kerala

It is unlikely that you would manage to learn Malayalam before you begin your holiday in Kerala. Thankfully Kerala has a very high literacy rate. Almost everybody speaks and understands English. If you speak English, you will get by wonderfully. Local language is Malayalam. We tried including teaching it in our Kerala holiday packages. It was not easy!

Currency

There is a cap of US$10,000 that you can bring into the country in cash per person. Banks work 6 days a week and transaction hours are between 1000 hours and 1400hours depending upon the bank. However ATMs are open and available anywhere and anytime or nearly. There is a limit to per day transactions on ATMs as well. Local currency is the INR or Indian Rupees. Best time to visit Kerala

Kerala remains warm through the year. Hence it can be visited through the year. If you are coming from a cold country, you will quickly get used to the warmth and the relaxed luxury of your Kerala tour package! Contrary to popular belief, Monsoon is also a nice time to visit. The occasional rains will barely be a hindrance. The biggest festival of Kerala, Onam, takes place during the monsoons. The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat races also take place during the month of August. In fact, these are some of the highlights of our special Kerala Holiday packages when we customise your bespoke travel.

Kerala cuisine

Whatever we say about the cuisine, it is not enough. The meat stews, the unlimited seafood, the speciality local dishes cooked in bamboo; it is simply amazing. In our specialised tailor made luxury Kerala tour packages, we design culinary tours for the chef in you.

Medical facilities

Kerala or India in general has excellent medical facilities in most urban areas. There may be more people waiting for treatment. But the competence of the doctors is unquestioned. All medicines are available in India in most pharmacies. You need to have the correct prescription with the name of the correct molecule.

Meeting people

While travelling in India, meeting people is one of the most interesting things that can happen to you. Indians are some of the most joyous and sensitive people that you would meet anywhere. To enhance your chance encounters, we advise you to carry local postcards from your town which you can show or give to the Indians that you meet to give them an idea of the place where you have come from.

Tipping

Tipping is customary in India, especially in hotels and restaurants. In most restaurants, you could leave a 10% tip of the total bill. If you are genuinely happy with the services, do not hesitate to leave a generous tip. It will show your warmth. Of course, if you are not happy with the services, you may not tip at all. Bellboys who carry your luggage to the hotel can be tipped INR20 – 50 for his services. You can tip the person who does your Ayurveda massage. Carry small change with you at all times for tipping during your trip to India. It is useful. A Rupee does not go a long way. But fifty Rupees can open doors!
